Back in 2002, I was involved in the initial development of CBC Radio 3’s now-infamous online magazine. The site featured Canadian independent music and culture in a fullscreen broadband experience. A new 100 page magazine was created every week for over 100 issues.
Radio 3’s magazine received accolades from around the world including an Art Director’s Award and a Webby Award in 2003. The site was sadly shutdown in 2004 after CBC Radio execs exclaimed ‘We’re a Radio department, let’s make radio, not internet!’. It was clearly time to move on.
All 101 issues of the Radio 3 magazine are accessible from this CBCradio3 Archive
CBC Radio 3 Magazine will always remain in my heart, the best in the world. It was simply amazing, beautiful, a merging of so many diverse ideas, media formats, resulting in a rich, immersive and interactive feature. I was at the tender age of 15 when I discovered CBC Radio 3 and ZeD TV. This multidisciplinary, experimental, collaborative approach to what is possible inspired me to get into the diverse new media field here in Vancouver, BC.
It is unfortunate that even the entire magazine archive has been pulled off life support after 3 years since being discontinued. Sigh. The many people involved in it are true visionaries. It’s a crying shame that it’s gone forever.
Hi Karey,
Thanks for the comment. It’s truly sad when a media company like CBC doesn’t realize when they’re onto something amazing. We received thousands and thousands of email from fans from around the world when the announcement to close it down came out. The CBC execs didn’t really see emails as valid and continued with their plans to shut it down.
I was fortunate to work with such a great team of people working on a project that we were all very passionate about.
